Methodology & editorial standards

VerticalEdge publishes editorial commentary on vertical-SaaS operating metrics. Operators read it to calibrate their FY plans. Investors read it before vertical-SaaS diligence. We owe both audiences a clear account of how we source numbers, vet claims, and handle errors.

Sourcing standards

Every quantitative claim in a VerticalEdge issue falls into one of three source categories. We attribute each one explicitly so the reader can verify.

1. Public filings and disclosures

When we cite Toast, ServiceTitan, Procore, Clio, or any other public or publicly-disclosed operator, the source is their most recent quarterly earnings release, investor presentation, S-1, or comparable public document. We use the most recent disclosure available at publication time and we name the quarter. When a public operator’s metric needs to be derived from two or more reported line items (e.g. CAC payback computed from S&M spend and new ARR), we describe the derivation so the reader can audit the math.

2. Analyst syndicated benchmarks

When we cite cohort statistics (median NRR, median CAC payback ratio, industry SSSG), the source is a named third-party benchmark publisher. Recurring references: Benchmarkit’s SaaS Performance Metrics Benchmarks, Maxio’s SaaS Performance Index, OpenView’s benchmark series, KeyBanc’s private-company SaaS survey. Each reference cites the publisher, the data vintage, and the cohort definition.

3. Private-cohort intelligence

For private-operator data that doesn’t appear in public filings, we maintain a working dataset built from operators in our network plus the consented submissions to OperatorIndex (the sister-property benchmark calculator at operator-index.com). All private-cohort references are anonymised by aggregate — we never name an individual operator or quote a specific number that could identify one. When we cite cohort statistics from this dataset, we disclose the cohort size and the time window.

What we do not publish

Three categories of content we deliberately avoid:

Operator references — vetting

When we name a public operator (Toast, ServiceTitan, Procore, Clio, MyCase, Filevine, Olo, etc.), we verify three things:

  1. The metric we cite is in the operator’s public disclosures or unambiguously derivable from them.
  2. The disclosure is recent — typically within the trailing four quarters of the issue date.
  3. The operator is fairly representative of the niche we’re discussing. We don’t cite Toast in a legal-vertical issue or Clio in a restaurant issue.

Corrections

Errors are tracked at the top of the affected issue with a dated correction line. The correction stays in place permanently — we don’t silently update the original. If a reader emails hello@verticaledgebriefing.com flagging a factual error, we respond within one business day and publish the correction within two.

The two most common correction types: (1) a metric we attributed to the wrong quarter, or (2) a derived number where the reader audited the math and found a different result. Both are normal; we welcome them.

Commercial disclosures

VerticalEdge is operated by Northtide Data Holdings, LLC (Wyoming, USA). The publication is free to readers and funded by three sources, in declining order of share:

We do not accept paid editorial placements, paid “research” syndication, or any other arrangement where a sponsor influences which operators or vendors we cover. The sponsor list is separate from the editorial agenda — structurally, not just rhetorically.

Editorial team

VerticalEdge is written and edited by a single operator working under the byline “VerticalEdge Editorial”. We keep the byline anonymous because the operator runs other vertical-SaaS properties and we want to preserve their editorial independence at those properties. The legal entity (Northtide Data Holdings, LLC) is responsible for everything published.

Independence and conflicts

When VerticalEdge covers a vertical SaaS niche where the operator behind the publication has a relationship (an investment, an advisory role, a customer), the issue carries an explicit disclosure at the top. As of the launch issues, the operator has no investments or advisory roles in any named operator covered. If that changes, we’ll disclose it in the relevant issue.
